Aspect Design Build, LLC

Tom Preissing & Shaun Winkler

Home building is an ancient art that relies on words like craftsmanship, hard work, communication, and great relationships to be successful. Aspect Design Build is founded on these types of solid principles and processes. The kind you should expect from your home builder. As a boutique custom home builder, they pride themselves in a commitment to unique design and the ability to create value. Aspect will work tirelessly to execute and deliver on your vision, expectations, and to build a home customized to your needs and tastes. They do this while keeping a singular focus on you, the client, and your vision for the design and feel of your home.

What inspires and influences your work?

Our clients, unique design and our tailored design/build approach. As a personal builder, it is our desire to be with the client every step of the way, from concept to completion and beyond. Each project is personal, unique and the details are carefully considered so we achieve the client’s vision. Our job is to cohesively blend these influences of lines, massing, colors and textures to allow form and function to be beautiful, unique, and tailored to our clients. Being involved in every aspect from the beginning, we are able to continually reference our client’s vision and interpret the build through their eyes, not our own.

How would you describe your build style?

We build homes that feature unique and creative design that remains approachable and practical and reflects the more casual lifestyle that most live on a day-to-day basis. We get really inspired by taking different architectural styles and giving them a refresh while maintaining a focus on our clients’ daily needs.  We recently completed a home that was a more modern take on a combination of Minnesota Cottage and 1920’s Lighthouse.  The house was a fun mix of new materials alongside repurposed items like brass doors in the tasting room and cast iron stanchions used as newel posts.

Why do you think your clients choose you as their builder?

We were brought up to believe that a strong, personal connection is at the foundation of an effective relationship.  We bring that same core value to Aspect Design Build.  In times that have become more and more impersonal, we strive for the opposite. The two of us are involved in every phase of Aspect Design Build, which ensures an emphasis on relationships with both our clients and each professional involved in the process. To that end, we choose to work with a limited number of clients each year to provide the kind of tailored, personal attention and communication needed to deliver on the design build promise.

What are some of your projects or accomplishments you’re most proud of?

We are extremely proud of the fact, in only a few years of operation, we have become a builder that is cementing itself as a force in the Minnesota custom world.

What do you wish others knew about your company?

We are an intentionally small (two person) company that prides itself on delivering an experience that is personalized to each of our unique clients.  Being a personal builder allows for a strong, close, trusting relationship with each of our clients that continues on well past the construction of the home.  In that breath, we choose to have a transparent build process in which our client can see all bids and invoices, we lock in a simplified design/build fee before construction (no fee for change orders), and we pass along all vendor/supplier discounts that we receive to the client.

What makes you most proud to be a builder?

We have a long-standing vision to bring home building back to its core roots, to recreate certain ideologies of what the craft used to be, and infuse them into 21st century home building practices. There was a time when a builder was a cornerstone of the community, a person who helped not only construct, but also shape the town. Someone that could be trusted for their expertise, skill, and hard work. Often, we hear people say, “They don’t build houses like they used to.” We agree, they don’t build houses like they used to. With new technologies like engineered structural components, designed mechanical systems, and more durable products, houses today are built better. As a home builder, our job is to blend the best of old and new. We love to work alongside our clients, with the goal of creating a home that they love and holds lasting value to both the client and the community.
